The
Candlewyck Inn, owned and managed by Fred Engle, in Keyser, WV, has been a
jewel in Keyser for the last two decades. Two large Victorian homes merged
together to form this restaurant in the heart of town, and it also
includes ten hotel rooms ($59-85/night)—ideal for a weekend escape to this
small town. Open seven days a week from 11 am until 10 pm—lunch is 11 am
until 4 pm, and dinner is 4 pm until 10 pm.
I’ve
tried the prime rib, tuna melt, and crab cake and found them excellent…a
definite compliment since I’ve experienced Maryland crab cakes all around
the Chesapeake Bay. The menu is quite diverse and includes steaks, pastas,
chicken, pork and seafood with weekend specials. Ask Laurie and Jennifer,
waitresses, to suggest something to you. Complete dinners range from $9 to
$15 and $19 for lobster tail and filet mignon.
The
Candlewyck has private dining rooms for 12-50 people plus three main
dining rooms. The acoustics in the large room are a bit too good, but
it’s fun listening to happy people. The day I was there, the ladies bridge
club met for their weekly luncheon and a few hands of cards—they didn’t
hesitate to let me know how delightful the place was. The décor appeared
to be Country Victorian, but the bar especially looked inviting for
meeting friends at happy hour (understand they sometimes even have a DJ)
to try some special seafood appetizers.
If you
call ahead or can wait a few minutes, the cook (often Fred) will prepare a
box lunch for two or more for that that special picnic. Whether you’re
visiting or just passing through Keyser, this would be the place for
gracious dining.
