D J's Out Back
410 W Piedmont
St
Keyser, WV
26726
(304) 788-9009
About 25 minutes south of Cumberland
via route 220S, over the Memorial Bridge, an immediate right onto W
Piedmont then five blocks finds you at the D J’s Out Back…honkey tonk
extraordinaire. Co-owners Dale Mallow and John Hardy certainly know
their business and have expanded the Out Back’s services to include
charity benefits, wedding receptions, ladies’ night, sports bar, private
game room, free billiards night, and outdoor BBQs. Finger foods,
especially 30-cent hot wings and crab soup, are the specialties. The
parking lot is large, but fills late in the evening. In fact, the Out
Back is open seven days a week with last call for food and drinks at 3
am—going to work in the morning could be a challenge. Although I didn’t
find the ladies room acceptable (the only downside), a renovation is
planned.
Don’t let the debarred list of over 100 concern
you, several security personnel are always on hand in the evenings to
assure peace. Although sparsely populated most afternoons (good place for
a quiet meeting), weekend crowds are often over 100 after midnight. As
John spins the platters (guess that phrase is obsolete these days), the
bubbles, vanilla mist, and fancy lights on the dance floor certainly
reminded me of a time warp. It is a popular place for people of all ages
and professions…I was impressed. So, if you are having trouble sleeping
or just want a great way to mix and enjoy the evening, this would be the
place.
The Barn
Intersection of Routes 50 and 220
Keyser, WV
(304) 788-6048
Don’t
be fooled by the address, The Barn is several miles outside Keyser, WV,
proper. Managed by Jim and Joy Cox, The Barn is closed Monday and Tuesday,
open Wednesday through Friday 3 pm until 11 pm, and open Saturday and
Sunday 1 pm until 3 am.
This
austere “local watering hole” serves typical bar food—wings, burgers, hot
dogs, fries—and a variety of beers and hard/mixed drinks. Through the
week, 20-25 locals gather daily to socialize with their friends; however,
Saturday nights often draw crowds close to 200 ready to enjoy
honkytonking and clap and dance with
LIVE bands ($4-5 admission)…some quite good. Lines sometimes form at the
bar and restrooms, and, if talking over the music is important, there’s
always a breath of fresh air outside. There’s never a reason to be bored
or alone on a weekend in Keyser!
